Seuss Week!

Seuss week is always a class favorite. We had a lot of fun this past week doing tons of projects to go along with all of Dr. Seuss' silly stories. Here are some pictures from the week:

Truffula Trees Bulletin Board!

My pride and joy for the week! The kids made truffula trees after reading The Lorax. We used green homemade playdoh, pipe cleaners and spikey pom poms (Found at Michaels!). The kids did a writing prompt about why trees are important. I thought this project was so adorable and I wanted to display it somewhere. So I thought all week and can up with a plan! I had the kids save me their juice boxes from lunch. We cut them in half and cut out one side. Then covered them with paper and made little shelves! The board looks so cute and the kids are really proud!

There's A Wocket In My Pocket

Kids create their own creatures that rhyme with wocket and make them fit in their pockets!

Oh The Places You'll Go

One of my favorites! We made hot air balloons by coloring with crayon and then using watercolors. Then the kids had tow write about if they could go anywhere in the world, where would they go? We had some cute answers. This one was clever... The grinches house.

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish

We used this book as a math activity. They created a fish math problems. Using the same technique as above. Draw the pictures with crayons and then paint with watercolors.

Horton Hatches an Egg

We used this book to learn about oviparous animals. (Animals that hatch from eggs). After we did an animal sort, each child drew an animal that hatches from an egg and put it in the egg shell.

Cooking with mouse and friends

Cooking with mouse and friends is a fun unit plan that combines easy cooking projects with Laura Numeroff stories. The unit includes three recipes: English Muffin Pizza, Fruit Smoothie, and Applesauce. It has an activity to go along with each. There are also some healthy food activities. The story activities include five If you give a... books. Each book has a variety of story sequence activities to go along with it. Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is one of my favorite holidays to celebrate in school.

Writing out the cards and passing them out to your friends in their mailboxes is a memory I still have from when I was little. 

Once I sent home the newsletter with the class list in February and the kids found out they could send out cards, they asked me everyday how many days until Valentine's day?!

It was a lot of fun and here are some fun projects that are part of my unit plan.

How Many Heart?

Children fill the heart with conversation hearts. Then they estimate how many are inside. Then they count them up and figure out the actual number.

Candy Heart Graphing

Each child was given a box of conversation hearts. First they sorted them by color on the mat. Then they tallied. Then made a bar graph. Finally, they answered the questions and wrote the total numbers. The only problem I had was that the boxes of hearts I got had blue instead of white, but we made it work!

Heart Sun Catcher

Its hard to see because this one was already hanging on the window. But its outlined in red paper with wax paper underneath. The kids filled with the tissue paper and then covered with the outline. Then we added glitter... or sprinkles according to my kindergarteners. They looked really nice hanging on the window all month.

I Love My Family Because...

Children drew a picture of their family in the hearts and then did a writing prompt about why they love their family. Made a cute bulletin board display :)

Heart Measurement

One of the heart measurement activities is to use a heart ruler to measure various items. You record the information and then compare the data.

Outer Space

We have spent two weeks learning about outer space!

The kids really enjoyed this unit.

Hip Hip Hooray it's the 100th Day!

Happy 100th day of school!

It's that time of year, the 100th day!

I hope you and your class had fun celebrating. If you haven't reached your 100th day yet, here are some ideas of what we did in our classroom this week.

If I had $100...

I would be famous.

(Wouldn't that be nice!)

I would buy new crayons.

I would throw it in the air.

We made pictures of what we will look like when we are 100 years old. I think these are adorable! We put them on our bulletin board along with a journal we made about what we will do when we are 100 years old. 

We also made crowns, fruit loop necklaces and played games.

Dinosaurs

We love dinosaurs!

This was such a fun week at school learning about dinosaurs!

We started the week by making a book of dinosaur facts.

Then we made fossils!

First we made salt clay by mixing flour, salt and water.

Then the kids played with the dough for a little, and then used dinosaur toys to make imprints. We baked them in a toaster oven. When they were cool we used metallic paints to paint them. The kids really enjoyed this and they came out really nice!

The most exciting project of the week was volcanos!

Unfortunately i don't have any pictures without the kids faces in them to share.

All we did was cut the top off of a water bottle and fill the bottom with baking soda. We dyed a cup of vinegar with food coloring. Then we added the vinegar and watched the erruption. The kids LOVED it!

This was a homework assignment. When i checked this one this morning I had to laugh. He did such a great job! It is exactly what you were supposed to do. Very creative!

Winter Projects

Here are a few fun projects from my winter unit.

We made mitten sun catchers.

This is a really fun center on a snowy day! (Just about the only good thing about the snow not melting from our playground for weeks!) Put a snowball on a cookie tray. Fill cups of water with different colored food dye. Give each child an eye dropper and turn your snow different colors. Easy cleanup too!

One of my favorite winter writing prompts and stories.

We read the story "The Snow Globe Family".

Then we made snow globes by cutting out the middle of paper plates and drawing on a circle paper. We wrote about what we would do if we lived in a snow globe. Really cute responses!
