Eric Carle Author Study

Eric Carle Unit

Of course we had to start with "The Very Hungry Caterpillar".
We made tissue paper caterpillars!
Then we did a days of the week book by writing the days of the week and drawing what the caterpillar ate each day.

"A House For Hermit Crab"
This was one of the kids favorite activities.
I set up a little 'store' with some art supplies. Each child was given a cup full of change. One by one they could come to the store and buy materials to decorate their house for hermit crab. They came out so cute and the kids had a great time!

Mister Seahorse Paintings

"Little Cloud"
One of the most simple, yet interesting projects.
I gave each child a dark blue piece of paper. We put a squirt of white paint in the middle and then folded the paper in half. Then on a sentence strip they had to write what they saw. It was so interesting to see them really use their imagination.

"The Lonely Firefly"
Follow directions to assemble a firefly!

Brown Bear Measurement

"The Very Busy Spider"
Handprint spiders, perfect decorations for Halloween :)

Colors of the Rainbow

Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet!
We love the colors of the rainbow!
Each day was dedicated to a different color and the children wore the color of the day to school each day. We did different activities based on the colors. Here are a few activities below, and be sure to check out my unit plan!

After reading about rainbows, the kids filled out this page about you need in order to see a rainbow!

Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See?
There are so many great color activities to tie into this book, and a bunch of them are included in my unit plan! Brown bear graphing, story retelling, color word book, and many more. This activity was a story sequencing book. After reading the book a few times I had the children recall what color each animal was and the order they appeared in the story.
(The adorable clipart is from KMP Doodles!)

I found these cute cards on teachers pay teachers- for FREE!
It made a great center. We used letter beads to practice spelling color words.

Oh how I love pinterest!
I found this great idea on pinterest... for anyone who does not know about this website check it out!
They have so many wonderful ideas for teachers.. and so much more!
The kids LOVED this activity, it is the second week we are using it and there is still a line at our science center!
All you need is baking soda on a tray, pour cups of vinegar into a cup and add food coloring. Have the kids use eye droppers to squeeze the colored vinegar onto the tray. It makes a cool fizz and turns the baking soda rainbow. It is easy clean up and keeps the kids entertained. Give it a try!

Check out my unit on teachers pay teachers, over 70 pages of fun activities!
