Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is one of my favorite holidays to celebrate in school.
Writing out the cards and passing them out to your friends in their mailboxes is a memory I still have from when I was little.
Once I sent home the newsletter with the class list in February and the kids found out they could send out cards, they asked me everyday how many days until Valentine's day?!
It was a lot of fun and here are some fun projects that are part of my unit plan.

How Many Heart?
Children fill the heart with conversation hearts. Then they estimate how many are inside. Then they count them up and figure out the actual number.

Candy Heart Graphing
Each child was given a box of conversation hearts. First they sorted them by color on the mat. Then they tallied. Then made a bar graph. Finally, they answered the questions and wrote the total numbers. The only problem I had was that the boxes of hearts I got had blue instead of white, but we made it work!

Heart Sun Catcher
Its hard to see because this one was already hanging on the window. But its outlined in red paper with wax paper underneath. The kids filled with the tissue paper and then covered with the outline. Then we added glitter... or sprinkles according to my kindergarteners. They looked really nice hanging on the window all month.

I Love My Family Because...
Children drew a picture of their family in the hearts and then did a writing prompt about why they love their family. Made a cute bulletin board display :)

Heart Measurement
One of the heart measurement activities is to use a heart ruler to measure various items. You record the information and then compare the data.

Outer Space

We have spent two weeks learning about outer space!
The kids really enjoyed this unit.
Here are some of the projects we made.

My own planet watercolor and crayon art.
Plus a journal about your planet.

Pattern Block alien!

Astronaut Craft

If I was an astronaut I would visit all the planets.

If I went to the moon....
"I would put mice on the moon with cheese"

Aliens Love Underpants

This is a really fun unit for early learners.

Hip Hip Hooray it's the 100th Day!

Happy 100th day of school!
It's that time of year, the 100th day!
I hope you and your class had fun celebrating. If you haven't reached your 100th day yet, here are some ideas of what we did in our classroom this week.

If I had $100...

I would be famous.
(Wouldn't that be nice!)

I would buy new crayons.

I would throw it in the air.

We made pictures of what we will look like when we are 100 years old. I think these are adorable! We put them on our bulletin board along with a journal we made about what we will do when we are 100 years old.

We also made crowns, fruit loop necklaces and played games.

We also did some fun groundhog day projects on Monday.
Let's hope Phil is right and we will have an early spring!

Dinosaurs

We love dinosaurs!
This was such a fun week at school learning about dinosaurs!

We started the week by making a book of dinosaur facts.

Then we made fossils!
First we made salt clay by mixing flour, salt and water.
Then the kids played with the dough for a little, and then used dinosaur toys to make imprints. We baked them in a toaster oven. When they were cool we used metallic paints to paint them. The kids really enjoyed this and they came out really nice!
Before

After

The most exciting project of the week was volcanos!
Unfortunately i don't have any pictures without the kids faces in them to share.
All we did was cut the top off of a water bottle and fill the bottom with baking soda. We dyed a cup of vinegar with food coloring. Then we added the vinegar and watched the erruption. The kids LOVED it!

This was a homework assignment. When i checked this one this morning I had to laugh. He did such a great job! It is exactly what you were supposed to do. Very creative!

Check out my unit on teachers pay teachers and have some fun with your class!

Winter Projects

Here are a few fun projects from my winter unit.

We made mitten sun catchers.

This is a really fun center on a snowy day! (Just about the only good thing about the snow not melting from our playground for weeks!) Put a snowball on a cookie tray. Fill cups of water with different colored food dye. Give each child an eye dropper and turn your snow different colors. Easy cleanup too!

One of my favorite winter writing prompts and stories.
We read the story "The Snow Globe Family".
Then we made snow globes by cutting out the middle of paper plates and drawing on a circle paper. We wrote about what we would do if we lived in a snow globe. Really cute responses!
"I would live with my friends"

Winter fun

Happy Holidays!
I hope everyone is enjoying celebrating the holidays with their families and classes, I know our kindergarten class certainly has!!

We started off the month with an Arctic Animals unit plan.
We learned about polar bears, penguins, reindeers and much more!

We made these polar bears with two kinds of paint. For the snow we mixed salt and white paint. Then to paint the polar bears we made a shaving cream paint with shaving cream, glue and a little white paint. When it dried the kids were amazed that he felt like a real polar bear! Really cute project.

Here is our last minute penguins. We were supposed to make the ones from my unit plan with egg cartons, but I forgot my egg cartons at home on the day of the project! So we made these cute paintable penguins instead ;)

This is a handprint and footprint reindeer, another fav of the kiddos. They trace their foot for the head and then two hands for the antlers. Cute and simple!

The elf on the shelf, Sheldon, has been causing some mischief at night!
He changed our milk and water red and green, he left us magic seeds which grew candy canes the next day, he left us a coloring book, he covered himself in bandaids, and we found him drinking syrup in our cabinet! Today we took a vote of what his favorite candy is. The kids voted on voting sheets and then we created a class graph. Hopefully we will find out in Sheldon's note tomorrow what his favorite really is!

We read the book "The Littlest Elf" Then made these cute elves with a writing prompt.
What would your job be if you were an elf at the north pole?
Help the reindeer

Help Santa make the presents

Last friday we had Grinch Day!
The kids wore their grinchiest outfits to school and we had a great day.
We made this cute Grinch project with a writing prompt
"How To Make The Grinch Grin"

Make a funny face!

Another cute writing idea that I found on Pinterest,
Santa's Stuck!
The kids assembled the pieces and drew bricks on the chimney.
Then the wrote about what they would do if Santa was stuck in their chimney.
Help Santa down the chimney.

We also learned about other holidays celebrated around the world.
We made a scrapbook of journal pages for each holiday and made a cute craft.

Glitter Menorah

Handprint Kinara

Fir Tree- Germany

And finally, the kids... and their teacher :) worked SO hard on their gifts for their family.
They made a handprint calendar. Each month has a different handprint with a poem to go with it.
That's right... 12 kids... 12 months... thats a lot of messy hands! :)
More pictures of this adorable project to come and hopefully posted on teachers pay teachers soon!

Happy Holidays!!
